The combination of brilliantly conceived set pieces, crafty storytelling and immensely appealing characters seems even more timely today than when it opened on Broadway. The lavish fantasy style accompanies a concern for the mistreatment of minorities and a suspicion of official narratives that are in perfect sync with the cultural moment.
Every moment is eye candy, with whimsical costumes and sets. Plot is rich and eventful and the script witty.
