About this event
“We only made the drama because of Nick Wallis… he is key in bringing this story to light.” ~ Patrick Spence, Executive Producer of Mr Bates vs The Post Office
“An extraordinary journalistic expose of a huge miscarriage of justice” ~ Ian Hislop, Editor of Private Eye
Guest Speaker: former Shoreham and Brighton sub-postmaster Sami Sabet. Read Sami’s story here.
Following public outrage (highlighted by ITV’s recent drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office), Nick Wallis – who was series consultant– expertly chronicles the very latest twists and turns with an insight into the whole affair in this revelatory, one-of-a-kind event.
Nick (BBC Radio 4’s ‘The Great Post Office Trial’, BBC One Panorama’s ‘Scandal at the Post Office’) will highlight all the facts and welcome on stage people directly affected by the affair. This will be a highly emotional and thoroughly informative journey, unveiling more shocking details and stories around this gripping, unbelievable, and outrageous scandal.
This is the true story of how hundreds of innocent people fought to clear their names after being pursued by the Post Office through the criminal courts.
Proud pillars of their communities were stripped of their jobs and livelihoods. Many were forced into bankruptcy or borrowed from friends and family to give the Post Office thousands they did not owe. The really unlucky ones were sent to prison.
Join Nick as he masterfully takes us through the shambolic commissioning of the disastrous Horizon IT system and examines the punitive methods employed by the Post Office – bypassing the police and the Crown Prosecution Service – to create the most widespread miscarriage of justice in UK legal history.
Nick will narrow in on the subsequent heinous cover-up and the staggering legal battles fought and won by campaigning subpostmasters, against all the odds.
As the public inquiry into the scandal reveals yet more horrors, and the government fast-tracking new laws and resources to resolve compensation, Nick will explain the latest developments and their significance.
Nick is the author of best-selling book: The Great Post Office Scandal – drawing on over a decade covering the story, serialised by the Daily Mail, and featured by the Sunday Times – and it is this book and this experience which forms the basis of this in-depth event.
Nick will talk about his time meeting the subpostmasters, collating evidence and testimony from secret sources within both Fujitsu and the Post Office, and read from his best-selling book. There will also be a Q&A session, giving you the chance to explore areas in more detail.
Nick will be joined by special guest Sami Sabet, former Shoreham sub-postmaster affected by the scandal, to answer questions and provide first-hand testimony.
Duration: 60 mins, followed by an interval, plus 30 minutes Q&A and interview with Sami, followed by a book signing.
