Showman Jerry Travers (Fred Astaire) demonstrates his new tap dance steps late one night in a hotel, much to the annoyance of Dale Tremont (Ginger Rogers) sleeping below.
She goes upstairs to complain and the two are immediately attracted to each other. Complications arise when Dale mistakes Jerry for his producer, who happens to be married to her best friend.
