About this event
The Wellington Wailers are Shoreham-by Sea’s very own shanty crew, who proudly keep the musical history of sea shanties alive.
The Wailers return to Ropetackle once more to transport you to the intrepid Age of Sail, and regale you with the songs that supported a sailor’s work on the waves.
At a time when wind was the only source of power for the vessels that travelled and traded around the world, captains relied on the muscle power of their crew to haul ropes, raise sails, pump bilges, lift anchors, and store cargo – and during these gruelling activities, a rousing song helped to keep time and raise the spirits of weary men.
These songs are brought back to life by the Wailers, who combine inimitable acapella style with the panache, humour and disorder that have become a trademark of this boisterous group.
Expect tales of high seas, foreign lands, piracy, heroes and villains, love lost and won, and the need for quantities of grog to keep out the cold.
With an exciting mix of new songs and old favourites, we guarantee a fun night for all.
